Know Exactly What You Are Buying
IBC Tote Grading System
Every used IBC tote is different. Our standardized grading system gives you complete transparency about the condition of each container so you can make confident purchasing decisions. No surprises, no guesswork.
Our Four-Tier Grading System
Every IBC tote that enters our facility is inspected, cleaned, and assigned a grade from A to D. This grade determines its suitability for different applications and its market value.
Grade A — Like New
Premium Condition • 1–2 Prior Uses
Grade A totes are in near-perfect condition. They have been used only once or twice, show virtually no cosmetic wear, and retain their original appearance. The bottle is clear or lightly tinted with no staining, scratches, or UV yellowing. The cage is straight, rust-free, and retains its original finish. All components — valve, cap, gasket, and label — are original equipment in excellent working order.
Best suited for:
- Food and beverage storage (with food-grade certification)
- Pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications
- Customer-facing operations where appearance matters
- Sensitive chemical storage requiring clean containers
- Long-term storage where container integrity is critical

Price range: $100 – $150
Grade B — Good
Best Value • 3–5 Prior Uses
Grade B is our most popular grade and the best value for most industrial applications. These totes have been used 3 to 5 times and show minor cosmetic wear that does not affect performance. You may see light scuffing on the bottle, minor label residue, or small surface scratches. The cage may have minor surface rust or light paint wear in spots. All components are fully functional and the tote has been cleaned and pressure-tested.
Best suited for:
- General chemical storage and transport
- Agricultural use (fertilizers, pesticides, water)
- Manufacturing and industrial processes
- Water storage (non-potable)
- Any application where function matters more than appearance

Price range: $65 – $100
Grade C — Fair
Budget Option • Multiple Prior Uses
Grade C totes have seen significant use and show visible wear. The bottle may be noticeably tinted or stained from previous contents, and the cage may have moderate rust, minor dents, or missing paint. These totes are still fully functional — they hold liquid, the valve works, and there are no leaks — but they are not suitable for applications where cleanliness, appearance, or food safety are requirements. They may need additional cleaning depending on your application.
Best suited for:
- Non-critical water storage (irrigation, livestock)
- Waste collection and disposal
- Construction site use (concrete additives, washout)
- Rainwater collection (non-potable)
- DIY and repurposing projects (planters, compost bins)

Price range: $35 – $65
Grade D — Recycling Only
Not for Reuse • Material Recovery
Grade D totes are not suitable for liquid storage or reuse in any application. They have significant damage such as cracked or punctured bottles, severely bent or collapsed cages, broken valves, or contamination that cannot be cleaned. These units are destined for our recycling program where the HDPE is ground into pellets and the steel is sent to scrap metal processors. Every Grade D tote is still diverted from the landfill.
What happens to Grade D totes:
- HDPE bottle is shredded and pelletized for new plastic products
- Steel cage and pallet go to scrap metal recyclers
- Valves and fittings are salvaged for parts if possible
- Zero waste — nothing goes to landfill

Not sold for reuse — recycling only
Food Grade vs Non-Food Grade
This classification is separate from — and just as important as — the A through D grading. It determines whether a tote is safe for storing food, beverages, and other consumable products.
Food-Grade Classification
A food-grade IBC tote must meet every one of the following criteria. If a tote fails any single requirement, it is classified as non-food-grade.
- ✓Manufactured from virgin FDA-compliant HDPE resin (21 CFR 177.1520)
- ✓Previous contents were food-grade materials only (documented)
- ✓Cleaned and sanitized using food-safe processes
- ✓No residual odor, staining, or contamination
- ✓All replacement parts (valves, gaskets) are also food-grade rated
- ✓Full chain-of-custody documentation available
Non-Food-Grade Classification
A non-food-grade IBC tote has either contained non-food chemicals or cannot be verified as food-safe. These totes are perfectly suitable for industrial applications but must never be used for consumables.
- ▸Previously held chemicals, solvents, or industrial liquids
- ▸Unknown previous contents (no documentation)
- ▸Manufactured from recycled or non-FDA HDPE resin
- ▸Cannot be cleaned to food-safe standards
- ▸Suitable for: chemicals, water treatment, agriculture, construction
- ▸Often available at lower prices than food-grade equivalents
What to Look for When Inspecting a Tote
Whether you are buying totes from us or evaluating containers from another source, here is a comprehensive inspection checklist.
Bottle Inspection
- ☐Check all surfaces for cracks, especially around the valve fitting and bottom seam
- ☐Look for UV yellowing or brittleness (squeeze test)
- ☐Check for warping, bulging, or deformation
- ☐Smell the interior for residual chemical odors
- ☐Verify the bottle material markings (HDPE, food-grade)
- ☐Inspect for deep scratches that could become stress fractures
Cage & Frame Inspection
- ☐Check for bent or broken cage wires and corner posts
- ☐Look for severe rust that compromises structural strength
- ☐Verify the bottle fits snugly within the cage (no excessive play)
- ☐Inspect welds at cage-to-pallet connection points
- ☐Ensure the cage top frame is not bent (affects stacking)
- ☐Check that the cage latches or clamps are functional
Valve, Cap & Pallet
- ☐Open and close the valve several times to check for smooth operation
- ☐Inspect the valve gasket for cracks, hardening, or compression set
- ☐Fill with water and check for leaks at the valve and cap
- ☐Verify the cap threads engage fully and tighten securely
- ☐Check the pallet for cracks, rot (wood), or broken runners
- ☐Confirm four-way forklift entry is clear and unobstructed

Pricing Note
Prices shown are general ranges and vary based on market conditions, location, quantity ordered, and specific tote configuration (pallet type, valve type, etc.). Contact us with your exact requirements for a firm quote. We always match or beat competitor pricing on comparable quality.
Our Quality Assurance Process
Every tote goes through a systematic inspection and grading pipeline before it enters our inventory. This process ensures consistency and accuracy in our grading.
Intake & Documentation
Each tote is received, photographed, and documented. Previous contents are recorded from shipping labels and owner declarations. Serial numbers are logged.
Cleaning & Decontamination
All totes receive a minimum triple-rinse. Food-grade candidates receive hot water wash, food-safe detergent treatment, and sanitization. Stubborn residues are treated with specialized solvents.
Multi-Point Inspection
Trained inspectors evaluate the bottle, cage, valve, cap, gasket, and pallet against our grading criteria. Each component gets an individual score that contributes to the overall grade.
Pressure Test & Final Grade
Every tote is fill-tested for leak detection at the valve and cap. Totes that pass all checks receive their final grade label and are added to inventory. Failing units are repaired or sent to recycling.
